14 January 03: Market Analysis successfully assists Telewest in Competition Commission's ''calls to mobiles'' inquiry

Market Analysis was retained by Telewest plc to provide economic advice and support in the Competition Commission's calls to mobiles inquiry which concluded earlier this month. The inquiry concerned the charges which mobile companies levy on fixed network operators such as Telewest for terminating fixed-to-mobile calls on their networks. The Commission concluded that mobile termination charges operate against the public interest, with charges 30 to 40 per cent in excess of a ''fair'' charge. They considered a number of possible remedies and concluded that charges should be controlled by a cost-reflective price cap, with an immediate 15 per cent reduction by 25 July 2003 and then a progressive reduction to the fair charge by 31 March 2006. Telewest welcomed the Commission's findings and supports its proposals.
